Autism In Racing

An accessible website build for an Autism-friendly horse racing days provider

About the project

The Cock-a-doodle-doo team were approached by Autism in Racing (AIR) to help the company build an online home for their business, which supports and encourages people with autism to enjoy horse racing as spectators or employees.

While the website had to be easy for the staff at AIR to update, it was also vital that the website was accessible to everyone who wished to visit.

An accessible website design

The initial steps of the build focused on creating simple branding that looked impressive but was also WCAG-compliant, ensuring all colour combinations had a contrast ratio that exceeded 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text.

Keen to provide barrier-free access to their online content, we installed the application Userway to their website, which provides the user with a menu to display the site in a way that suits them best.

Offering a screen reader, contrast settings, multiple text-altering options and much more, this application, alongside designing the website following accessibility guidelines, saw the site score 100/100 for accessibility.

100s across the board

Using Google’s page insights for developers, the website scored 100 out of 100 for accessibility, best practices and SEO.AIR is also the top Google search term for ‘autism racing’, ‘autism race course’, ‘horse racing autism’ and much more.

Project Types

Autism in Racing CIC were delighted with the professional and responsive service provided by the team at Cockadoodledoo. We are a small organisation with big ambitions and it was important that we work with a partner to build our website who took the time to understand what we do and what we need to say. We now have a great website which meets our needs, it’s accessible for users who need additional support and is simple to navigate and update. The project was delivered on time and to budget. We’ll be crowing about the team when we share our website with people with autism who want to enjoy an autism friendly day at the races.
